Stories: Timor in progress
With the United Nations set to wrap up their mission by the end of 2012 the small island nation will enter a new era. Predictions for the future depend on who you ask, for members of the growing middle class in Dili more dominant concerns surround the impact of the two-speed economy that has flourished under the large development community. For others in Timor, personal security is seen as the biggest potential concern once the United Nations mission finally packs up, without the large UN police force present people are worried that unresolved tensions could once again flare up as they did in 2006.
For now Timor-Leste will celebrate reaching double digits with applause from the international community most noticeably the recently peaceful presidential elections, the next decade standing for the country will be equally fascinating.
